What are Carpet Moths & Carpet Beetles / Bed Bugs?
As the name suggests, carpet moths and carpet beetles are flying insects that live in and around carpeted areas. While the moths do not pose a health risk, they are a pest in homes because of the severe and costly damage their larvae cause to carpets, fabrics, furs, leather and even clothes. Carpet Beetles, or Bed Bugs, will also severely damage carpets & fibres, but have also been known to bite humans! (as seen in the photo on the left)
The carpet damage may continue for many weeks after moth caterpillars & beetle larvae have hatched. Serious harm may have been done before numbers of flying moths or beetles are seen and so prevention of a carpet moth or carpet beetle problem is important.
While their are DIY products available to deal with minor carpet moth / carpet beetle infestations, it can actually prove more cost effective to hire a professional to ensure the carpet moths / carpet beetles are irradicated entirely. How do i know if i have a Carpet Moth or Carpet Beetle Infestation?
Carpet Moth / Carpet Beetle infestations can vary from minor to severe. Obviously it is far easier to spot once the infestation has started to damage your carpets and fabric, but it is important to acknowledge the signs and act quickly before the moth infestation reaches the potentially costly stage of devouring your expensive carpeting! The first thing to look for is the moths or beetles themselves. This can be tricky as they are small and like to hide in or on the carpet, around edging and crevices. You may only notice 1 or 2 when vacuuming or moving furniture, as this will usually make them fly up to a higher safe point until the carpets are no longer being disturbed. The more you notice, the more likely it is that there are eggs and larvae in your carpet fibres!
Once the eggs start to hatch they will begin eating your carpet fibres from the underneath up (as seen in the photo on the left).
